FAQ's
Q: What is a Freestyle session?
A: This is for skaters who are at higher levels to practice their jumps, spins, programs, moves in the field, dance, and pair skating. These sessions are not for public skaters. Lessons are also given during these sessions.
Q: What level do I need to be to skate on Freestyle?
A: As a general rule most skaters are at least a Basic 4. The skaters need to also know basic skating etiquette on the ice.
Q: What is a Lutz corner?
A: Because of the nature of the Lutz jump, it is most commonly performed in the 10:00 and 4:00 corners of the rink. Strive to avoid long-term practice activities in these corners, and try to be aware of your surroundings when you are in them.
Q. What age is recommended to start learning to skate?
A. The recommended age to start Basic Skills is 3 years of age. We do not recommend starting any earlier as the skater has difficulty standing up.
Q. What's included in the registration fee?
A. When you register for Georgetown’s Basic Skills Program you receive a membership to the United States Figure Skating (USFS), a record booklet to record your progress, and professional instruction.
Q. What if I miss a class, can I do a make-up class?
A. No. We do not offer make up classes at this time. If you know you are going to miss a class, inform your coach and/or the director.
Q. What equipment is needed?
A. Skates, helmet (bike/helmet), warm clothing including gloves, coat, pants, and socks. Clothing should be warm, but should allow for proper movement.
Q. What else can I do after LTS?
A. Once you have decided that you want to continue skating and further your knowledge, you can sign up for private lessons. You are entitled to a free 10-minute trial lesson with each coach to find the perfect fit.
Q. What are private lessons?
A. A private lesson is a lesson that is one on one with the skater and a coach. It is more in depth than a group lesson and it is generally longer in length. It is a good way to build on basic techniques of skating.
Q. What are the costs involved for private lessons?
A. Enrolling in a private lesson includes paying for ice time and for your coach. Coaching fees vary from coach to coach depending on experience. Freestyle ice at Georgetown Ice Center is $8 for one hour and $12 for two hours.
Q. How do I move into private lessons from LTS?
A. Make sure you want to pursue skating, whether you want to compete or skate recreationally and continue to build your knowledge. The next step is to discuss the coaching options available and contact the Director for additional information.
Q. How do I get my skater into Learn to Play Hockey?
A. If this is the first session of skating we recommend that the skater goes through Snowplow 1, 2 and 3. From there the skate can move to Learn To Skate Hockey. Most skaters start in LTS Hockey 1 and move to LTS Hockey 2. Once the skater reaches LTS Hockey 2, the LTS Hockey instructor contacts the Hockey Director to inform him about a potential skater in Learn to Play Hockey. (This is a general rule of thumb. Some skaters may go through levels faster based on experience and/or age.)
